Putting race and immigration centre stage in the referendum campaign resulted in a tide of abuse…As immigration will be the dominant issue in the debate on where Britain goes post -Brexit we will need a continued focus on the impact this is having in communities.” Stated Jack Dromey Labour Shadow Police Minister.
In Kent, the police have reported 2,180 hate crimes for the year up to November 2106 of which 1,668 involved race hate. Over the same period last year only 680 crimes were reported; an increase of 1,500. This follows the rise in nationally reported hate crimes and the worry trend of abuse and violence. The offences have been mainly harassment and threats of a racist nature against “visible minorities” as well as people from Eastern Europe.
The Kent Independent Police Advisory Group are preparing a report on Race Hate Crime with its findings and recommendations to be put to the Kent Deputy Chief Constable in early 2017.
Local Labour activist Angela George is a member of the Sevenoaks Independent Police Advisory Group stated:
The police are looking very seriously at this issue and would want anyone who has suffered from abuse to report the incident to their local police station.”
