Ashley Kelly from Swanley & District Labour Party

Unity is the Watch Word

Unity was the watchword at the gathering of South East Region delegates in Liverpool.

Party members from Oxford to the Isle of Wight, Dover to Southampton, cheered heart warming speeches from newly-elected leader Jeremy Corbyn, deputy Tom Watson and our hardworking Member of the European Parliament Anneliese Dodds.

There was a common theme – opposition to Tory austerity measures and promoting Labour’s positive alternatives, especially on the Tories’ divisive new commitment to building more grammar schools. Those present from outside Kent simply don’t understand how they have persisted in our county.

My personal highlight was seeing Jeremy Corbyn talk to our delegate Jackie Griffiths and wish her luck in the coming Swanley by-election. He delighted Jackie by knowing where Swanley was!

By Meeting people from all over Kent, we were able to start planning next year’s county council elections – starting with an education-themed campaign next Saturday. We’ll publish our campaign themes on this site.
