Profiles of our Local Party Members
John Carpenter: I was born in Swanley and have lived in the district all of my life, residing in my current house in Kingswood Ave. for the past 37 years.
I have belonged to a Trade Union since my days as an apprentice, originally in the electricians union, the EETPU, then with various changes in Sogat, the EPIU, the T&G and finally in Unite, to which I still belong.
During my 30 years employment at Associated Newspapers I was proud to belong to a strong Trade Union Chapel, during which time we supported many T.U. causes, including The P&O ferry workers, The Welsh miners during the miners strike, the Wapping dispute and the Manchester electricians dispute. I have recently supported The Peoples Assembly’s march against austerity and of course the junior doctors dispute.
I have been a Labour supporter all my life, and apart from a few years absence during the latter years of Tony Blairs premiership, have been and remain a Labour party member. I am also an Administrator for the Swanley & District Labour Party Social Media Action Group.
Interests include films, music festivals and pubs, ( The Tolpuddle Festival caters to all these!) and feel that what Swanley lacks is a social centre for it’s residents, especially our kids.
